Dose caffeine for the health of rivers

06 September 2021

Professor of environmental chemistry and vice-dean at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the University of Montreal, Sébastien Sauvé, comes to the rescue of the rivers of Bolton-Ouest.

A project to study the different toxins found in water leading to the proliferation of blue-green algae has been set up. This project resulted in the "Adopt a Stream" program aimed at sampling the watercourses of participating organizations and municipalities.

Professor Sébastien Sauvé participates in this program. He is evaluating the dosage of caffeine in local tributaries to determine if there is contamination from human activity. Indeed, the presence of caffeine in a stream comes from the urine and reveals that there is a problem with the flow of septic tanks or the connection of sanitary sewers. Thus, due to this campaign, it will be easier to target the origin of the problem in order to correct it.
