Introduction to SWOT for estimating surface water

Summary: SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) is a space mission led by NASA (USA) and CNES (France) with the participation of CSA (Canada) and UKSA (United Kingdom) scheduled for launch in late 2022 (https://swot.jpl.nasa.gov/; https://www.aviso.altimetry.fr/en/missions/future-missions/swot.html). This mission aims to increase our capacity to observe water by probing up to 90% of the world's surface and ocean waters. The SWOT mission will provide a better understanding of changes in water availability. Specifically, SWOT will estimate water elevation for all lakes 6 ha and larger, and for rivers 100 m and larger. The vertical accuracy will be 10 cm when averaged over 1 km2.

The objective of this workshop is to provide a technical introduction to SWOT, its main characteristics, the different products that will be available and its contributions to the measurement of surface water availability. The workshop is intended for researchers and students in water sciences, but also for professionals in water resource management.
