CentrEau Hebd'EAU |Sorption and subsequent release of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and PFAS precursors in contaminated source zones

82nd webinar in the CentrEau Hebd'Eau series entitled "Sorption and subsequent release of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and PFAS precursors in contaminated source zones" by Fuhar Dixit

Speaker

Fuhar is currently a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California Berkeley investigating practical solutions to address the global challenge of drinking water scarcity. Fuhar’s doctoral research focused on the use of anionic ion exchange resins to target toxic per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and disinfection by-products (DBPs), two of the most common and harmful forms of contamination. At Berkeley, his research focuses on the detection, treatment and bioremediation of PFAS in the environment. In particular, he is examining the fate and transport of PFAS and its precursor compounds by augmenting the total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay. In addition to his research contributions towards the field of environmental remediation, Fuhar strives towards the protection of wildlife and natural resources. He is also a member of American Water Works Association’s Emerging Contaminant Committee and served as a board member for IIT Alumni Canada in British Columbia.

Abstract:

Decades-long use of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including through the application of aqueous film forming foams (AFFFs) for emergency response and firefighter training, has resulted in widespread PFAS contamination. These source zones are a long-term liability for site owners (particularly federal defense and transportation agencies), that could result in PFAS release over the time scale of many decades. My talk will focus on the assessment of fate and transport of PFAS after their release to soil and sediments in locations where AFFFs has been released. Specifically, I will focus on providing a better understanding of the sorption and subsequent release of cationic, zwitterionic, and neutral PFAS from source zones under environmentally relevant conditions.

The presentation will be given in English
