The dangers of water disinfection by-products

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) in water are formed when chlorine reacts in the presence of decaying organic matter. Exposure to DBPs through contact and/or consumption of water can have harmful impacts, such as increased risk of low birth weight babies, birth defects, miscarriages and cancer.

Research is focusing on reducing the amount of chlorine (which remains essential for the elimination of pathogens) used to make water safe to drink by various means.
