Our regular member Sylvain Jutras, professor-researcher in the Department of sciences du bois et de la forêt, is pleased to invite you to his conference entitled "Water and forest roads in Quebec: issues and solutions".
Summary: While the risks of sediment inputs to water environments from logging areas are minimized by the use of sound practices, this is not the case for forest roads. The road network currently in place is aging, largely unused and under-maintained, accelerating the failure of water crossings that directly threaten the protection of aquatic ecosystems. It is more urgent than ever to put in place an integrated and comprehensive management plan for the public forest road network, otherwise the very principles of sustainable forest management would be threatened.
