2nd Workshop on Floodplain Mapping and Climate Change

HEC-RAS training for mapping flood zones

In addition to the 2nd Floodplain Mapping and Climate Change Workshop to be held on November 19th, the Quebec section of the ACRH is pleased to present a complementary technical workshop on the use of HEC-RAS (River Analysis System) software. ) for the establishment of flood plains. This software, developed by the US Corps of Engineers' Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC), is one of the most powerful computing tools for this activity and is widely used throughout North America. A 2D version, made public in 2015, makes this computer tool even more versatile and has the advantage of being freely available. Participants will need to have a basic knowledge of the software and have the software already installed on their personal laptop to complete the exercises.

Notes will be given at the beginning. The software and the relevant documentation can be downloaded here.

Mélanie Trudel is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Building Engineering at the Université de Sherbrooke. Its main research activities include the development of innovative methods to exploit all the information made available by a range of various sensors (satellite, drone, in situ). She has expertise in hydrological and hydraulic modeling, including data assimilation. Ms. Trudel is also studying the impact of climate change on water resources. Since 2014, she teaches a graduate course on advanced aspects of hydraulic modeling using the HEC-RAS model. She is also working on the mapping of flood zones, especially for the Estrie region.
