CentrEau Weekly Webinar: Hydrology and remote sensing

Twelfth webinar of the series entitled "Using remote sensing for hydrology"

Speaker: Prof. Robert Leconte, Université de Sherbrooke, membre régulier de CentrEau, titulaire de la NSERC Industrial Research Chair on the Application of Hydrometeorological Data from Satellite Images To Improve Hydrological Forecasting

Language: French, with slides in English

Summary: Flood protection and mitigation have continuously gained importance in Canada and around the world, particularly due to climate change. They were accompanied by the need to improve hydrological forecasting. Forecasting supplies to reservoirs is also essential for hydroelectric producers in order to optimize production while respecting the various physical, environmental and socio-economic constraints imposed on water systems. The significant increase in the number of satellite missions has made available a considerable amount of hydrometeorological information, but the potential of which has been comparatively little explored for forecasting inputs. An overview of the possibilities offered by remote sensing in hydrology will be presented. In particular, we will see how radar remote sensing can help short-term hydrological forecasting. The potential of the first imaging radar altimeter to help calculate contributions to a reservoir for hydroelectric purposes will also be presented.

New series of weekly CentrEau webinars "all about water management". These short 20-minute presentations will be offered live every Thursday at 1 p.m. followed by a short discussion period. CentrEau professors and researchers, as well as guest speakers, will present their research work and its importance in a semi-popularized manner. Watch the previous webinars on our YouTube Channel!
