A Legal personality for the St. Lawrence River

Speaker: Yenny Vega Cardenas, president of the Observatoire international des droits de la Nature (OIDN)

The purpose of this webinar is to disseminate the plan to give our beautiful river legal status as Ecuador, Bolivia and New Zealand have done, so that it is adequately protected. The Rights of Nature movement aims to make Nature a subject of law, in the same way as a human being or a corporation. By making Nature a subject of law, it is recognized that it can be harmed and therefore that legal action can be taken on its behalf. Granting the St. Lawrence River a legal personality would imply recognizing its rights, such as the right to protection, to respect for its natural cycles and to restoration.
