COVID-19 and sewer backup

31 March 2020

Faced with a shortage of toilet paper, many citizens are leaning towards alternatives such as disposable wipes. However, these wipes and others substitutes can block and backup sewers. Canadian municipal authorities and wastewater professionals therefore ask everyone never to flush anything other than the 3 P (pee, poop and paper), which is urine, human waste, and regular toilet paper, into the toilet.

An article in La Presse of April 2, 2020 also highlights the shortage of operators in wastewater treatment in Quebec municipalities and that the actual crisis could exacerbate this shortage. A more pressing problem, however, is the volume of cleaning wipes found in the toilet, jeopardizing wastewater treatment.
